Condolences

Condolence From: Johnna Foster Schaeffer
Condolence: Mr. Cain was so much more than a guidance councillor. He was a dear friend, and a very important role model for me. Mr. Cain helped me to graduate, to deal with hardships and along with other teachers, inspired me to join the Catholic Church. My life is beautiful largely thanks to his friendship. I am so very sorry for this tremendous loss.

Condolence From: Josh & Ashleigh Cordery
Condolence: From the moment we moved into the home across the street from Bert and Ann in 2009 we have been blessed daily by their incredible loving kindness. Instead of a cheese plate or cookies, Bert was eager to welcome us to the neighbourhood with an introductory paddle in Algonquin Park. From that point forward Bert became our personal guide and spawned in us a new love for the outdoors through many hikes, paddles, evening snowshoe treks and owl watches. We've enjoyed afternoons on the Cains' front porch and delicious meals in their home. Bert would regularly stop over with a fresh danish from the bakery, or even better a homemade dessert which he and Ann had dressed up complete with whipped cream and berries. Whenever Josh was away on a military exercise or tour, Bert took it upon himself to take care of our snow removal, water our gardens and bring in our mail. There was simply no end to the lengths that he went to to in helping wherever help was needed, and sometimes before we knew we needed it. Never was this more apparent than when our 6-week old son fell ill and Bert and Ann stepped in as surrogate parents and grandparents, making sure that we were cared for. Bert truly was a special man who made loving his neighbour his life's work. He will be deeply missed and our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the entire Cain family.

Condolence From: Jorg Stockmann
Condolence: With a heavy heart my condolences go out to the Cain Family. I recall my time as a student at Bishop Smith and hanging out with Matthew. And, for a while, during grade 9 and 10, I was at the Cain home on a daily basis just to hang out. It seemed like a second home. Bert and your entire family were very warm and welcoming to me despite the fact that I was less than a stellar student. At a time when I had little respect for anyone, Bert earned my respect as he was firm but fair. A quality I learned to appreciate during my many trips to the office and one I strive to apply in my profession as a police officer. I am certain Bert has influenced the lives of many students like myself. The life lessons he has taught me have helped shaped the person I have become. Bert will be greatly missed and I am so very sad for your loss. Bert truly was a hero in life, not in death. My deepest condolences, Jorg Stockmann

Condolence From: Robert & Nora Anderson
Condolence: Nora and I were so sad to hear of Bert's passing. We recalled our move to Pembroke back in 1977 from Niagara Falls. Our home there hadn't sold and the real estate agent advised us to leave our furniture until we sold. When Bert heard of our limited furniture arrangements, he immediately brought us a crib for our newborn. Such acts of kindness are fondly remembered for a long time, and Bert left a legacy of many such acts. With fond memories of our years in the Champlain English Depratment. Our condolences to the Cain family.

Condolence: So sorry to hear of Bert's death. Bert and I started our teaching careers in the early '70s at Champlain, both hired by Mr. Bob Baxter. Although John and I returned to London Ontario, we saw Bert over the years and know why his students are remembering Bert as a kind, compassionate and amazing teacher who loved what he did. Most of all, though, he loved his family and rejoiced in his grandchildren. Our sincere condolences to Ann and the family.

Condolence: Dear Ann and Family: Sincere sympathy on the death of your beloved Bert. As a colleague of Bert's in Student Services for several years, I had the privilege of witnessing his outstanding and compassionate counselling skills. Many students came to him in times of need and found comfort and renewed direction in life. In honour of Bert, I wish to submit the following quotation. Condolence: Mr. Cain was one of the most influential teachers I ever had. He challenged me to think critically and go above and beyond. He was even the one who discovered I needed glasses - I struggled to read the chalkboard and he called me out for daydreaming! If it weren't for Mr. Cain, I'd still be walking into walls to this day. To his family, I am so sorry for your loss and hope that you find peace. Mr. Cain was a super guy and touched the lives of so many.

Condolence: My condolences to Mr. Cain's family. I still think about the lessons he taught me in English.....the life lessons that had nothing to do with English class. He was a rare teacher who had the ability to engage you, teach you and truly leave an impact on your life and he did it with a slight grin and a twinkle in his eye. I truly respected him and thank him for everything that he taught me. He will be missed, but his memory lives on in those he touched.

Condolence: Bert was special and will be missed. Our deepest condolences to Ann and the kids. We are sorry we didn't have a chance to say to Bert how much his kindness, caring and good thoughts meant to us. We will always remember him as an outstanding educator, attending our wedding, the many hours he volunteered at the various hockey schools & goalie clinics and also, the inquiring of our boys' latest adventures.
