Obituary for Helen Marie Rose Bradley (Clouthier)

BRADLEY, Helene Marie Rose - With grace and peace Helen passed gently into the night on January 20, 2023 in her 82nd year. Helen Bradley (nee Clouthier) of Pembroke, beloved wife of the late Jack Bradley. Helen was firstborn to Rose and Tom Clouthier. Pepere, was delighted that she was born with striking red hair! She was a beloved sister to the late Yolande, Raymonde, Claudette, and the late Bobby; and more sister than sister-in-law to Barbara. Perhaps you heard Helen‘s remarkable singing voice at the Lake Dore Dance Hall, or her band the “Milkmaids”? Maybe you joined her to sing around a corn roast bonfire at Eckfords’ farm? Perhaps you laughed at her dramatic antics during her many years of performing in the Irish Play? Maybe you sang with her in the Valley Voices? Maybe you played broomball, or fastball with Helen? Helen was swept off her feet by the charming rascal, Jack, Bradley and they were married in 1957. And so, with a small dog gifted to her from Bill and Marg Moore she set off to begin married life in Algonquin Park with Jack, the railroader. With much-needed, creativity, tenacity, and self-taught ingenuity Helen picked up a length of yarn and began to knit a beautiful life. That beautiful life brought them five daughters, Dawn, Jacqueline, Cindy, Shayne, and Norma. This required developing exceptional and evermore sophisticated cooking and sewing skills. Future sons-in-law were grateful recipients and if you were ever at 601 you probably were too. The family were long standing members of the Western Pleasure Riders where Helen served as treasurer. They all cherished the many friendships made there. Mom enjoyed playing card games and until his death in 2010 Mom and Dad challenged each other to a nightly game of cribbage. After Dad died Mom often expressed that she felt very blessed to be invited to build her home on the Biederman Farm property of her son-in-law, Bruce’s family. Heartfelt thanks from those of us who live away to sister Shayne, her husband, Bruce, and their family for their tender care. Mom cherished the special friendship she shared with Bert and Dorothy Biederman. Mom was soon coaxed by her sisters into joining the card club at the French Church. Picking up this strand of her French heritage rekindled long lost friendships and developed significant new ones including a welcome friendship with John Chaput. Maybe you played euchre there with her? Maybe Mom helped you pick up your own strand and start your own weave. As owner of the “Wool Shop” did she find your lost stitches, interpret or create a pattern for you? Maybe her artist’s eye for colour helped you choose the perfect Phildar? As her family grew Mom took great joy in playing various games with the little ones. Extensive family euchre tournaments brought out competitive spirits; it was considered an exceptional feat to beat Helen. Mom has fostered very close relationships with her 11 grandchildren and was happy to be alive to meet her great grandchildren. In recent months Mom received a terminal diagnosis and she requested palliative care in her home. We five daughters did our best to honour that request. So we moved in. With support from the Champlain Palliative Care Team of PSW’s, nurses, OT and Physio we stumbled, learned and refined mom‘s care. Heartfelt thanks to exceptional nurse, Erin and dependable PSWs. Jen M, Jen, R and Jacey (to name a few) What a privilege to have shared this journey with Mom!!! Mom, it was a joy to hear your stories, be reminded of who we are because of who you were. Your voice in our heads, your beautiful presence. It is a beautiful life you knit Mom. You even darned in most of your ends, leaving us with few gaps and strands to hold onto. And so we’ll knit a row, purl a row and maybe invent a few unintended stitches… Helen’s family thanks you for being a part of her journey; Dawn (Jim St. Onge, Bojana, Pat, Freya, Kathleen, Graham, Maeve, Keegan, Amy), Jacqueline (Doug Brown, Bradlee, Jeremy, Linus, Isla, Keely, Maddy), Cindy (Paul Devine, Stuart Webb, Angel, Seth, Isosceles, Peter, Damian, Tyson, Fuschia, Freedom, Josh Webb, Natalie, Emily, Hudson), Shayne (Bruce Biederman, Adam and Monica, Courtney, Sarah) and Norma (Taylor, Morgan Schneidmueller). The family will receive relatives and friends at the Neville Funeral Home, 491 Isabella St., Pembroke on Friday, January 27th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at The Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, Pembroke on Saturday, January 28th, 2023 at 11 a.m. Interment St. Columba’s Cemetery, Pembroke. In lieu of flowers, donations to Muscular Dystrophy Canada would be appreciated. Online Condolences may be left at www.nevillefuneralhome.ca
