Sister Mary Rice, CSJ
(Sister Honora)
The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada, announces the death of Sister Mary Rice at Mount St. Joseph, Peterborough, on October 12, 2021. Mary was born in Douglas, Ontario and on September 8th, 1944 she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Pembroke and, upon final profession, adopted the religious name of Sister Honora. She is survived by her sisters, Eulalia (Ryan), San Diego, Sister Teresa, Peterborough and Sister Loretta, Pembroke. Sr. Mary is predeceased by her parents, the late Mabel (Duffy) and Raymond Rice and her sisters Rita (Chatsick/Crockford) and Elizabeth (Mathieu) and her brothers Joseph, Michael, John and Father Isaiah. She is lovingly remembered by the members of her religious community, the Sisters of St. Joseph as well as many nieces and nephews. Sister Mary began her religious ministry by teaching at Holy Name School Pembroke, St. Luke’s in Petawawa and St. Patrick’s, Mount St. Patrick. She was also a teaching Principal in Our Lady of Fatima, Renfrew, St. Andrew’s, Killaloe and St. Mary’s in Deep River. She continued her ministry, focusing on religious education and Pastoral care in Penticton B.C., St. Mary’s in Deep River, Cranbrook, B.C., and St. Mary’s Parish in Ottawa. She was instrumental in starting up charismatic prayer groups in Nelson B.C., and in the Pembroke Diocese. Throughout retirement Sister Mary continued to be involved and active in supporting and praying with devotions to Mary and Joseph. Her religious knowledge and teachings were shared with others via seminars, spiritual direction and bible study courses. She kept herself up to date on politics and economics by reading newspapers and watching current events on television. Sister Mary was full of gratitude for the Lord calling her to be a Sister of St. Joseph. She was also grateful for the Peterborough Convent for their loving care. On Monday, October 18th, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Pembroke, there will be the funeral mass at 10:30 a.m., respecting the guidelines for Covid-19. Interment at St. Columba's Cemetery, Pembroke.
